Types of Drug and Alcohol Testing for Employers:

When and Why to Test

Employers have various reasons for implementing a drug and alcohol testing program. One reason is to ensure compliance with federal regulations such as those of the Department of Transportation and insurance carrier requirements. Some employers may also use drug and alcohol testing to match other organizations' efforts to maintain a drug-free environment, minimize the risk of hiring employees who may be drug users or alcohol abusers, reinforce the company's stance on drug and alcohol use, identify current users and abusers for referral to assistance, establish grounds for discipline or termination, improve workplace safety, deter recreational drug use, and reduce the costs of alcohol and drug abuse.

Drug and alcohol testing can be conducted at different times, such as pre-employment tests to decrease the chances of hiring drug users, random tests to discourage drug and alcohol abuse and identify current users and abusers, and reasonable suspicion and for-cause tests for employees showing signs of being unfit for duty or having unsafe work behavior patterns. Post-accident tests are also conducted to determine whether drug or alcohol use was a factor in the accident.

Our DOT Physical Exams

DOT physical examinations are health physicals required of commercial motor vehicle drivers. DOT regulations state any "medical examiner" can conduct DOT physicals. The DOT physical exam is valid for up to 2 years. The medical examiner may also issue a medical examiner's certificate for less than 2 years when it is desirable to monitor a condition, such as high blood pressure or other conditions. The medical examiner will furnish a copy of the results (long form), plus a medical examiner's certificate (DOT health card) to the person who was examined the same day.

The government is now requiring all CDL holders to submit their health card along with a self-certification form to the state in which their driver's license is from. You can self certify today by getting in touch with us so you don't need to go to a DMV office to have it processed.

Schedule your DOT physical exam today and ensure compliance with regulations. Call us to book an appointment or visit our website for more information.
